5 Lessons From #GIRLBOSS For You In 2015

Happy New Year!

I truly want to wish everyone a happy and successful 2015. Sorry for the recent M.I.A!

I recently resigned from my corporate job to follow my dreams of building my own business so I had to take some time off to organize my life. With this first post of 2015, I want to share with you what I learned from this #Girlboss Sophia Amoruso and her book  that totally kicked me in the butt and gave me enough courage to walk away from my job and pursuit my dreams.

If you don’t know who Sophia Amoruso is, she is an absolute #Girlboss. Far from what we usually think of a successful person’s profile, Sophia spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By 22, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke and directionless. It was there that Sophia decided to pick up her passion for vintage clothes and start selling vintage clothes on eBay.

Today, Sophia is the CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees and she wrote this book to inspire and encourage all the #Girlboss out there to find their passion and follow their dreams…I am one of them!

Lesson #1: “Dream Big! Start Small!”

“Life is short. Don’t be lazy” – Sophia Amoruso

As the new year just starts, we all have goals and resolutions we want to achieve. However, many of us tend to fall off track by the middle of the year. The same applies with our life’s dreams and goals. I recently realized how quick we tend to forget our childhood dreams of becoming a super star, a pilot, a model, a famous person, only because we grew up hearing people telling us to be ‘realistic’. I once had a dream to become a famous fashion designer too. I used to draw all day and rehearsed myself walking out at the end of my own fashion show. And I grew up putting my dreams and my passion away because they weren’t ‘realistic’ enough, because “they are not going to pay my bills” as my dad used to say. Well, only if my Dad also knew that a bachelor in Business Management and HR couldn’t help me to pay my bills either.

How many of us wake up everyday to go to work to feel miserable there? How many of us go through our day knowing we can do so much better with our life than settling for a mediocre life?  How many of us are not currently happy with our situation right now? Have you ever thought if you didn’t give up your dreams, how would your life be? Do you think you would be a lot happier?

Fortunately, I was able to dream again.

2 years ago, I started my small venture with a group of friends. We were all crazy heads who are all in our 20s, dreaming about fancy cars and expensive lofts, thinking about taking our parents traveling the world and…all have our 9 to 5 full time jobs just like any 20 something years old person out there. Being around them made me slowly discover the part of me that I have forgotten. I started to see more of the ME that I was dreaming about when I was little. I started to do things that I never thought I could. I started to find myself. And like Gandhi said “Whatever you do in life will become insignificant. But it is important that you do it.”, you can dream as big as you want, but make sure that you start small and work your butt off to make that dream come true.

Lesson #2: “Treat Your Mind Like Your Monday, Don’t Waste It”

And it is very true…

You know, your mind is just like your bank account. The more positivity you give your mind, the more successful and prosper you will be. The more negativity you let into your mind, the more miserable and unsatisfying your life will be.

Many of us blame the world on our current situation but the truth is, nobody can change your world but yourself. We have within ourselves the power to control our life and shoot for the moon but a lot of time, we choose to let life conquer us. When you focus too much on the negativity, you will start losing the positivity in your life.

Remember, you are what you attract!

Lesson #3: “Bet On Yourself”

Why? Because as you grow up, you will realize you are all that you got. Place that bet on yourself even if it’s only 1% because if you don’t, who will?

One of the key secrets to be successful and happy in life is to learn to take control of your life. You have to believe that you can be that super star even before you make it. Your brain is a very funny thing. Once you choose to believe in yourself and your ability, your brain will work all its magic to find a way to make things happen in your life. And as I said, you gotta start small first in order to achieve something big in life. The smallest thing you can start today is to believe that you can move the world if you want to.

Lesson #4: “The Straight And Narrow Is Not The Only Path To Success”

No, it is not.

We always look at a successful person and think that he/she is lucky. The truth is that behind their success is a hell of struggle and obstacles they had to overcome. In simple words, success is not easy and it will never be easy. As an entrepreneur who is still going through the startup, I understand exactly what this lesson means. Sometimes, when you are on lonely road pursuing your dreams, things sometimes can become blurry. Just remember this lesson and hold on tight!

Lesson #5: Money Looks Better In The Bank Than On Your Feet

One of the first thing that I had to learn as soon as I quit my job to pursuit my entrepreneurial dream is to learn how to manage my money. I quickly learned that money does look better in my bank than on my feet. As a business owner, you need to realize that having a positive cash flow to invest back to your business is just as important as a blood bank. Don’t spend money like the CEO when your business is still young and unstable. Financial planning and budgeting became so important to me.

If you would like to learn more on how to manage your budget and your finance on a daily basis with the most basic tips, please common below and I will make a post about it.

Stay tuned for my up coming posts and have a happy and successful new year everyone!
